Bishop places fourth in state tourney

It's not quite a repeat, but it's still pretty darn good. The Bishop McGuinness girls cross country team followed last year's state title by taking fourth at Saturday's 1-A championship race at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons.

"Right now it's kind of hard for them, but all in all it's been a great year," Bishop head coach Robert Youtz said.

GIBSONVILLE— Like all great decisions, Scott Loosemore only wishes he made this one sooner.

His Eastern Guilford team still needed a quarterback when practice began this summer. Josh Morehead confidently nominated himself. Pros: Two-time All-State defensive back, best athlete on the team, knew the offense from time at wide receiver. Cons: Never played quarterback.

GREENSBORO — Six matches into the season, Grimsley soccer coach Matt Martineau could tell he had the puzzle pieces but was still trying to find the fit. The Whirlies were 3-2-1, but with nine seniors, Martineau could feel there was another gear they hadn't quite reached.

Greensboro Day's victory celebrations this season -- there were plenty -- were decidedly subdued, a ho-hum acknowledgment that larger aspirations loomed. The breakthrough came Saturday, as the Bengals capped an undefeated season by upsetting Charlotte Latin 3-1 in the NCISAA 3-A championship at North Raleigh Christian Academy.
