Church to offer course on dealing with life transitions

When Brady Faggart retired as pastor of First Lutheran Church in 1993, he wanted to explore areas of ministry beyond the parish. He eventually turned his focus to outdoor ministry and recently outreach into the Latino community in Greensboro.

Making the transition was not a piece of cake, though.

As he made his way through the changes and reflection that come with retirement, he decided to help others by sharing what he learned as he sought direction at a different turn in his life.

Slowly and silently, War Memorial Stadium is dying.

The lovable concrete-and-wood relic on Yanceyville Street is struggling to keep its feet as weather, neglect and age take their toll. Cracks and chips have spread on its walls and floors and some of its brightly painted folding seats have come unhinged.

We all knew the historic, city-owned facility was in bad shape. But not this bad.

Just days after John McCain named Sarah Palin his running mate, news about her pregnant teenage daughter hit the Web.

Ah, the power of the Internet.

Bloggers posted opinions on the Republican duo and their strength against Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and his running mate, Joe Biden.

So many rumors crept onto the Internet through blogs and Web sites - with traditional media following closely behind - that Republicans even asked everyone to back off.

Not that anybody listened.

I honestly don't think the issue of her 17-year-old daughter's pregnancy ought to be a big deal in Sarah Palin's quest for the vice presidency.

Given the inexact science of raising teenagers, stuff can and does happen, no matter how good a parent you are.

But Palin's and her husband Todd's prepared statement about the matter does raise more than a small concern.

"We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us," that statement says.

It's not easy, though. Immigrants and refugees who come to the U.S. find that it takes longer than they thought to attain the things they dreamed of. Their own home. A car. An education. A better job.

For Rafid Kully, an Iraqi refugee who worked as a translator and interpreter for the U.S. military, it can't happen soon enough. Though college-educated and bilingual, he still struggles.

Guilford wins Souper Bowl

GREENSBORO -- Guilford College jumped out to a 16-point halftime lead and held on for a 22-12 win over Greensboro College in the 12th annual Souper Bowl on Saturday night at Herb Appenzeller Field in the opening game for both teams.

The Quakers won the toss and elected to receive, and they hit the Pride with trickery on the first play from scrimmage. Josh Vogelbach pitched the ball to Chad Kastor who tossed it back to Vogelbach. The senior found a wide open Kevin Vaughn for a 60-yard touchdown pass and a 6-0 lead 19 seconds into the game.

The most effective and agreeable public policies are those that maximize individual liberty while maintaining societal order. Speed limits, for instance, do not prevent us from driving across town; they only ensure that we do so safely, without endangering our fellow citizens. Public safety depends upon regulation of individual conduct. Because most of us recognize this fact intuitively, we understand the need for, and abide by, speed limits. We do not argue that we should be allowed to drive 90 mph through school zones.

2 wounded, 1 dead in shooting at Greensboro bar

GREENSBORO - Two men were wounded and a third man was killed after they were shot at a bar early this morning, police said.

Greensboro police responded to a call at 2:26 a.m. Sunday at the Iguana's Bar and Billards at 405 Rocky Knoll Road.

They found Steven Antoine Sturdivant, 23, Keith Brandon Sturdivant, 20, and Michael Devon Rice, 21, suffering gunshot wounds.

Steven Sturdivant died a short time later at Moses Cone Hospital, police said.

Keith Sturdivant and Rice were being treated for gunshot wounds at Moses Cone.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration seized control Sunday of troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, aiming to stabilize the housing market turmoil that is threatening financial markets and the overall economy.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson is betting that providing fresh capital to the two firms will eventually lead to lower mortgage rates, spur homebuying demand and slow the plunge in home prices that has ravaged many areas of the country.

ELON -- The idea came to Deon Louw while he and his wife were caring for two foster children for a weekend.

The boys' foster mother, now their adoptive mother, is single. Louw thought about how he and the boys had bonded and how it seemed beneficial for everyone involved. Louw has a daughter but no sons.

So the Elon man researched how being fatherless affects boys.

Then he founded Father Figures.

The data "led me to a point where this has to happen," Louw said.

The initiative aims to provide role models for fatherless boys.

As a descendant of immigrants, like almost all Americans, I feel the need to counteract the scapegoating and demonizing of people who, for the most part, are only trying to make a better life for themselves, as my ancestors did.

While doing some research for a grant, Cathy Daniels-Lee read that female entrepreneurs were more comfortable around other women.

"I have women come in all the time wanting help for their business, as well as women aspiring to be business owners," said Daniels-Lee, program coordinator for the Nussbaum Center for Entrepreneurship.

Thus came the idea to team up with the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce and the Commission on the Status of Women to organize a Women's Entrepreneur Conference. The theme is "Equipping Women Entrepreneurs to Thrive in the 21st Century."

Seven-year-old Jason is going through a lot right now.

Jason's parents have been fighting with each other. A few weeks ago, mom and dad told him and his brother that they were getting divorced. Jason was relieved. "Now," he thought, "they will stop yelling at each other and I can finally get some sleep." But, that didn't happen.

Now, Jason's parents fight about who gets what, child support and how often he and his brother will get to see Daddy.
