High property insurance cuts out beach vacation

State representatives have created a paradox for me. Now that my property insurance has gone up to pay insurance for beach property, I can no longer afford to rent a beach home for my family vacation. I guess I will visit the beautiful North Carolina mountains for the next few years.

City Council must watch coliseum more closely

When a petty dictator in a far-off country starts pushing his weight around, we send our Marines in. What do we do when a local czar, who rules our coliseum complex, embarks on a building project that’s been kept virtually secret from the taxpayers and city government?

Only good public option will help all Americans

Americans have waited long enough for adequate health care for all. Too many people are under-insured or uninsured. This is not only a shameful reflection on the priorities of our country, but it has been proven that, in the long run, it’s even more expensive than a public health option would be.

Newly elected leaders can move the city forward

Greensboro voters let their wishes be known and now is the time to move forward. I hope the newly elected City Council will work for the good of all of Greensboro and not just the people living in certain parts of town. Hopefully, the new City Council will make decisions based on common and reasoned good sense and will not be overly influenced by activist groups, PACs and the Pulpit Forum.

Greensboro Symphony pleases High Point crowd

The Greensboro Symphony is a wow! High Point University enjoyed a standing-room-only audience last week when the Greensboro Symphony performed in our Arts Center. Community leaders, faculty, students and visitors from the Gate City were treated to a magnificent evening of music.

President’s leadership does not inspire trust

We are in perilous times and you, News & Record, are not helping! You keep printing letters from those in favor of a public option in health care, yet more than 50 percent do not want this. We have seen what the government has done with some other programs. One I can think of that no one seems to remember is how well it has “cared for” the American Indians.

Try a different detour around I-40 shutdown

Thank you for reporting on the closing of I-40 in Haywood County. While some may say, “Why bother? It’s 200 miles away,” I travel for a living and that is important information for me.

Private health coverage leaves terrible choices

I have been with and without decent benefits, as have my college-educated and working grown children. I have a co-worker who has horrible insurance through work that is expensive, has a high deductible and only pays 60 percent of any real medical care or surgery expense. She makes $8 an hour. How can she survive like that?

Proposed amphitheater may raise noise issues

Well, well, well. Here we go again with the making of another grand fiasco. I’m referring to the proposed coliseum amphitheater. Why can’t our elected and appointed officials communicate on the same wavelength? Or don’t they care?

Red yeast rice facts

Your Oct. 19 article regarding red yeast rice failed to mention that on Aug. 9, 2007, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning letter regarding red yeast rice supplements. I suggest that your readers visit the FDA’s Web site for more information.

Suspect’s bond set too low in hit-and-run death case

This is question for our judges and newly elected officials concerning the hit-and-run death of David Sherman: How does a driver charged with death by motor vehicle, hit and run, and driving with license revoked get a $5,000 unsecured bond? Even after a history of failure to appear in court on major driving violations.

Photo provoked fear

In the current atmosphere of fear in our country around H1N1, germs and danger, I was dismayed to see the front-page picture of a UNCG student getting his shot (Oct. 30). This is not the picture I would choose if I were encouraging folks to get this vaccine. The needle is tiny and the shot is over in no time.

What’s really scary

On the front page of today’s paper was the lead-in: “Rep. Foxx says health bill scarier than terrorism,” which led me to think that, perhaps, even more scary might just be — Virginia Foxx.

Francis J. McCormack
Greensboro
