HIGH POINT — Come for the furniture, stay for the drinking water.

High Point has the best-tasting drinking water in the state, according to the American Water Works Association & Water Environment Association's North Carolina section.
The group held its 87th annual conference in Charlotte this week, and a panel of judges chose the city's water out of 17 entries in a blind taste test. Smell and taste were the major criteria.
Terry Houk, High Point's assistant director of public services, accepted the award along with water plant Superintendent Wendell Pickett.
Houk said he was honored but can't explain why the city's water tastes so good.
"We don't have 11 herbs and spices or anything," Houk said. "But we do use chlorine as a disinfectant. That may have helped."
Houk credited Pickett with running a tight ship at the water plant and said his stringent standards and oversight make a big difference.
"It's Wendell water," Houk joked. "That must be why it's so good."
Raleigh and Gastonia tied for second place.
