HIGH POINT — A fire at an electrical substation knocked out power to the city's southwestern corner this morning.
The fire, at the substation at English Road and Burton Avenue, was reported at 5:49 a.m. today. About 5,000 High Point homes and businesses were without electricity this morning. Power was restored to all customers by 9 a.m.
Warren Larson, the city's director of customer service, said city workers are still assessing the extent of the damage to the substation.
"It was not as bad as it could have been," Larson said.
Larson said the fire started because a piece of equipment called a regulator failed. Hot oil from the regulator splashed onto a building inside the substation complex and set it on fire. The building contains electrical control equipment. No injuries were reported.
