Greensboro store fined for overcharging
A Greensboro store paid a fine for excessive price-scanning errors, according to the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' Standards Division.
The state agency conducts periodic, unannounced inspections of a business' price-scanner system to check for accuracy between the prices advertised and the prices that ring up at the register.
If a store has more than a 2 percent error rate on overcharges, inspectors discuss the findings with the store manager and do a follow-up inspection. Penalties are assessed if a store fails the follow-up inspection.
A news release states that the Walgreen's at 4701 W. Market St. in Greensboro was ordered to pay $915 after two inspections. The initial error rate in January was 4 percent, based on four overcharge errors in an inspection of 100 items. A follow-up inspection in February found an error rate of 2.67 percent.
The Wal-Mart Supercenter on West Clemmonsville Road in Winston-Salem was ordered to pay $3,875. Tractor Supply in Mount Airy was fined $1,650.
Money from the civil penalties is distributed to school systems statewide.
