ASHEBORO (AP) — The North Carolina Zoo has reopened after closing this weekend because of a broken water line.
The zoo, in Randolph County, lost about $120,000 in visitor revenue when it had to close over Mother's Day weekend.
Zoo spokesman Rod Hackney said today that 7,500 free tickets were given away to people who were turned away. Hackney said the decision to close was made around midnight Friday.
By Saturday morning, cars were backed up several miles because visitors didn't know about the closure. Hackney estimated visitation would have been 9,000 to 10,000 people.
The closure came after a 12-inch water main broke. The entire water system had to be shut down for repair.
