WINSTON-SALEM — John McCain would nominate judges in the mold of Chief Justice John Roberts and Samuel Alito, the presumptive Republican nominee told gatherers Tuesday at Wake Forest University.
He also used his speech to attack Democratic rival Barack Obama, complaining he was one of 22 senators to vote against Roberts' nomination.
Somehow "Senator Obama's standards prove too lofty a standard for a nominee who was brilliant, fair-minded and learned in the law," McCain said.
McCain also pointed out there were 31 vacancies on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, which serves North Carolina, as an example of reluctance among Senate Democrats to confirm President Bush's judicial nominations.
Democratic rival Sen. Hillary Clinton also voted against Roberts’ nomination. But McCain did not mention her in his speech.
McCain appeared relaxed in front of the crowd filled with supporters including college students and area residents.
"I appreciate the hospitality of the students and faculty of West Virginia - of this great Wake Forest University," he said, smiling.
McCain's faux pau drew chuckles from the crowd.
"I'm catching up with my speech here," he said.
