Wiley in House District 61

A News & Record editorial

The overriding issue in the state House District 61 Republican primary contest is who can most convincingly lobby on behalf of the High Point furniture market.

Incumbent Rep. Laura Wiley points to her record of pushing hard for a reliable state funding stream for the semi-annual trade show. At her urging, the state currently devotes about $3 million for market promotion and transportation needs.

Challenger George Ragsdale says he can do better, if given the chance. He cites his business background and unnamed contacts in the legislature as the reasons.

A 31-year-old banker, he's seeking his first elective office. However, name recognition isn't a problem. His family has been politically active in the Jamestown area for years.

Wiley, 50, a former High Point City Council member, is seeking a third term. While in Raleigh, she's been successful in getting legislation through the Democrat-controlled House, including a bill cracking down on Internet predators.

Either candidate would represent the district well, but Wiley's experience gives her the decided edge. She sits on key committees dealing with the state's troubled mental health delivery system and House ethics complaints.

Regarding the furniture market, Wiley has effectively conveyed the message to legislators that the event's impact extends beyond the Triad. That's increasingly important as competitors seek market dominance.

On other issues, both candidates generally agree. Both would like to remove the state's cap on charter schools. Ragsdale wants the state to encourage wider access to biofuels. Wiley opposes closing state mental hospitals until an accurate bed count can be determined.

With no announced Democratic opposition, Tuesday's vote should determine the outcome. The hardworking Wiley deserves another term.
