2008 all-area basketball teams

First Team: Kendall Smith, Glenn, Guard, Senior

The 6-foot-5 Piedmont Triad 3-A player of the year started at point guard as a freshman, but he played more down low this season and averaged 18.5 points and 10.3 rebounds a game to lead Glenn to within a game of the state championship. Smith, who was also named to the All-Western Regional team, will attend N.C. State on a full academic scholarship.

 

P.j. Hairston, Dudley, Forward, Freshman

Explosive freshman steamrolled his way to Triad 3-A player of the year honors, averaging 18.4 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.4 steals per game, and he helped lead the Panthers to within a game of the state finals. Coach David Price: "A lot of freshmen can't stay focused, but he was really tuned in and really had a desire to win."

Jay Canty, Ragsdale, Forward, Sophomore

Dynamic wing player exploded in his sophomore season for 17.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2 blocks a game. An all-conference and all-district selection, Canty is one of the most sought-after sophomores in the country.

 

E.j. Abrams-ward, Thomasville, Forward, Senior

Abrams-Ward was the runner-up Yadkin Valley player of the year after posting 22 points and 9 rebounds a game as Thomasville captured its 20th consecutive conference championship. The Bulldogs lost in the regionals to eventual state champions Winston-Salem Prep. The 6-foot-5 Abrams-Ward will play linebacker at Tennessee.

 

Second Team: J.t. Terrell, Cummings, Guard, Sophomore

The Mid-State 2-A player of the year more than doubled his scoring average to 26 points a game to go with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Coach George Robinson: "We knew he was going to be good, but he's improved drastically from one year to the next."

Bruce Woodall, Greensboro Day, Guard, Senior

The PACIS player of the year scored 17.2 points a game and shot 42 percent from 3-point range in leading the Bengals to their third consecutive appearance in the state championship game. He will attend Virginia on a golf scholarship. Coach Freddy Johnson: "He won't let your team lose. The bigger the game is, the better he plays."

Kedrick Williams, East Forsyth, Guard, Senior

The Metro 4-A Player of the Year averaged 19.6 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3.1 steals per game for the Eagles. He will play next season at St. Paul's College in Lawrenceville, Va.

Jonathan Frye, Northern Guilford, Guard, Sophomore

Lanky transfer stuffed the stat sheet with 17.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists a game en route to All-Triad 3-A and first-team all-district honors in the Wildcats' first season of competition. Coach Stan Kowalewski: "At his age, he's as fundamentally sound a basketball player as I've ever coached."

Keith Manley, Grimsley, Forward, Junior

Manley averaged 14.3 points, 10.1 rebounds and 3.3 blocks per game and led the Whirlies to the sectional finals. Manley garnered second-team all-district honors and was the runner-up Metro 4-A player of the year.

Third Team: J.b. Baldwin, Graham, Forward, Senior

Baldwin averaged 19.9 points and 11.8 rebounds per game as Graham went undefeated in the regular season and rolled through the Mid-State 2-A tournament. He was an all-conference, all-district and all-region selection.

Tony Washington, Andrews, Guard, Junior

Washington averaged 16 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals per game for the Red Raiders, who advanced to the sectional semifinals. The junior guard was an All-Piedmont Triad 3-A selection.

Julius Brooks, Page, Center, Junior

The 6-foot-9 All-Metro 4-A and all-district selection posted 13.5 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocks per game. He and the Pirates caught fire during the playoffs and advanced to the sectional finals.

Mark Jernigan, Eastern Guilford, Guard, Senior

How's this for versatile -- Jernigan almost averaged double-figure rebounds as a guard. His 19.7 points, 9.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.7 steals helped make him an All-North State 2-A selection and the runner-up conference player of the year. He'll play at Methodist. Coach Charlie Lyons: "He was really almost like an assistant coach. He set the standard for hard work."

Brandon Pennix, Dudley, Forward, Junior

Bruising forward moved from a sixth-man role into the starting lineup and became one of the Panthers' most reliable weapons. The All-Triad 3-A selection averaged 15.4 points and 9.4 rebounds a game and was named to the All-Eastern Regional and All-Little Four teams. Coach David Price: "He takes the game real serious. He just loves to bang around the basket."

Honorable mention: Charles Goodwin (junior, Andrews), Aaron Toomey (sophomore, Bishop McGuinness), Marcus Heath (senior, Dudley), Anthony Callicut (senior, East Davidson), Brad Monroe (senior, Eastern Randolph), Jarvis Braboy (senior, Glenn), Nate Blackburn (senior, Graham), Javan Mitchell (junior, Greensboro Day), Jay Lewis (junior, Greensboro Day), Jaquan Beloved (senior, Grimsley), Christian Tonkins (senior, Grimsley), Michael Terry (senior, High Point Central), Ryan Fitzgerald (senior, Ledford), Kashaun Johnson (senior, Morehead), Jacob Lawson (freshman, Northern Guilford), Pat McCarthy (Northwest Guilford), Luqman Tijani (senior, Page), Wally Jones (junior, Ragsdale), Bryan Roberts (senior, Randleman), Wantrel Parker (junior, Rockingham County), Justin Ward (senior, Rockingham County), Trey Artis (junior, Southeast Guilford), Antoine Cheston (Southern Guilford), T.J. Hayes (junior, Southwest Guilford), Donald Simms (senior, Thomasville), Josh Jones (senior, Trinity), Eric Potts (senior, Trinity), Deuce Bello (freshman, Westchester), Gerald Boston (junior, Williams).

First Team: Trumae Lucas, Grimsley, Guard, Senior

The two-time Metro 4-A player of the year helped lead the Whirlies to an undefeated regular season with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists a game. Lucas, who will play at Florida, was MVP of her district, the Little Four Tournament and the Metro 4-A Tournament.

Jasmine Gill, Page, Guard, Senior

A McDonald's All-America nominee, the 6-foot-1 Gill averaged 20.1 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game en route to Metro 4-A player of the year honors. A member of the all-conference, all-district and All-Little Four teams, she'll play next season at Boston College.

Erinn Thompson, Bishop Mcguinness, Center, Junior

The 6-foot-3 conference player of the year averaged 14.4 points, 12.6 rebounds and 3.1 blocks a game as Bishop rolled to its third straight 1-A championshnip. Thompson, who is committed to Virginia, was named most outstanding player of the championship game after posting 14 points and 19 rebounds. Coach Biran Robinson: "She's very inwardly motivated to make herself the best basketball player and best leader she can be."

Secily Ray, Thomasville, Guard, Senior

A McDonald's All-America nominee, Ray posted 20.5 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals per game and helped lead Thomasville to a 21-4 record and a trip to the sectional finals, where it lost to eventual state champion Bishop McGuinness. The all-county selection and Yadkin Valley player of the year will play at Wake Forest next season. Coach Lacardo Means: "She's probably got one of the biggest hearts of any player I've coached. She just hates to lose."

Second Team: Krystin Fields, Grimsley, Forward, Senior

Formerly a guard, Fields manned the post admirably for the Whirlies this season with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals per game. She was an all-conference, all-district and All-Little Four selection. She'll play at Towson.

Tyisha Bridges, Southwest Guilford, Guard, Senior

The Piedmont Triad 3-A player of the year averaged 17.6 points, 3.8 rebounds and 4.2 steals per game as the Cowboys went 9-1 in conference play and earned a spot in the playoffs. Bridges will play at Norfolk State next season.

Helen Terry, Dudley, Guard, Junior

The Panthers' only returning varsity starter averaged 18 points, 6 assists and 4 steals per game and garnered Triad 3-A player of the year honors as Dudley advanced to regionals. Coach Kris Britton: "She knew what her role was in terms of leading by exmple, and that's precisely what she did. Helen just doesn't have a nervous bone in her body. She likes to take big shots. She's very comfortable being the one in position to decide the game."

Tonisha Baker, Andrews, Guard, Junior

The runner-up Piedmont Triad 3-A player of the year, Baker averaged 17 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals a game and was named to the Wachovia Holiday Classic all-tournament team.

Eleisha Hairston, Reidsville, Forward, Junior

Electric forward posted jaw-dropping numbers across the board, averaging 22 points, 15 rebounds, 6.9 assists, 6 blocks and 5.5 steals per game. No wonder she was the North State 2-A player of the year and is garnering considerable Division I interest. Coach Casey Elrod: "The most athletic girl in the county."

Third Team: Beth Miller, Graham, Guard, Junior

The All-Mid-State 2-A selection averaged 11.5 points, 6 assists and 3.5 steals a game as the Red Devils advanced to the state finals for the second consecutive season. Miller's 204 assists tied the school season record and moved her into first place on Graham's career list. Coach Kyle Ward: "Bottom line is, she makes her teammates look really good."

Krystal Moore, Rockingham County, Guard, Junior

The slippery guard posted 17 points, 4 assists and 4 steals per game and was named to the Triad 3-A all-conference team. The MVP of the Reidsville Holiday Classic, Moore also set the school single-game records for scoring (41) and 3-pointers made (9).

Amy Beasley, Southeast Guilford, Guard, Junior

Beasley, the Mid-Piedmont 3-A player of the year, averaged 13.5 points, 7.5 assists and 3.2 steals per game and was a member of the NewBridge Bank all-tournament team. She helped lead her team to the sectional finals.

Deandre Murray, Northeast Guilford, Guard, Senior

A Triad 3-A all-conference selection, Murray averaged 16.2 points, 9.5 rebounds and 4.3 steals per game and was named second-team all-district. Coach Brandon Apple: "Probably one of the greatest scorers I've seen. She has the ability to take over a game offensively like nobody I've had play for us."

Samantha Coffer, Northern Guilford, Forward, Freshman

The freshman averaged a double-double for the season with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 5 blocks a game. She was voted to the Triad 3-A all-conference team. Coach Kim Furlough: "She had to be a leader for us on the court -- she didn't have a choice -- and she adjusted well."

Honorable mention: Megan Gallimore (junior, Asheboro), Alyssa Cutshaw (junior, East Davidson), Ashley Alderin-Fleagle (East Forsyth), Lashonda Anderson (junior, Eastern Guilford), Kaela Bellefeuil, Madison Dulaney (junior, Glenn), Meredith Mills (senior, Glenn), Simone Robinson (Graham), Lindsay Brendle and Megan Tate (High Point Central), Brooke Hensley (McMichael), Jakeita Artis (senior, Morehead), Amber Dalton (junior, Morehead), Shelley Reese (senior, Northeast Guilford), Anna Schlobohm (senior, Northwest Guilford), Hannah McIntosh (sophomore, Northwest Guilford), Gretchen Bennett (sophomore, Northwest Guilford), Chevana Pickard (sophomore, Page), Courtney Arrington (junior, Ragsdale), Meghan Ingram (senior, Ragsdale), Ashley Palm (Rockingham County), Jazlyn Gibbs (senior, Southeast Guilford), Haley Hackett (senior, Southeast Guilford), Tanisha Ortega (senior, Southern Guilford), Gladney Brown (senior, Southwest Guilford), Anna Wright (junior, Trinity), Jenny Kim (senior, Westchester)
