ELON — Darryl Hunt, who spent nearly two decades in a North Carolina prison for a murder he did not commit, will screen his film Monday at Elon University.
"The Trials of Darryl Hunt" film screening and discussion will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Koury Business Center. Hunt and his attorney, Mark Rabil, will attend the screening. Chris Mumma, legal counsel for the North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence, will moderate the discussion afterward.
In 1984, Hunt was convicted of raping and murdering a young newspaper reporter in Winston-Salem. DNA evidence cleared Hunt of the rape in 1994, though neither the judge nor appellate court would grant a new trial. Hunt was released from prison in 2003 after another man confessed to the crime.
The documentary about Hunt's life has won numerous documentary awards and was selected for the Sundance Film Festival documentary competition in 2006.
