Surry Wood has mopped up plenty of lopsided victories during four seasons at top-ranked North Carolina. But there might not have been a more fitting way for the senior walk-on from Raleigh to cap his career.
Coach Roy Williams emptied his bench late in the Tar Heels' 113-74 romp against Mount St. Mary's, and fellow walk-on Marc Campbell called for the alley-oop for Wood.
Wood set a screen, rolled toward the basket, leaped and caught Campbell's feed before throwing down a two-handed dunk that sent his teammates into a frenzy.
"I set the ball screen, Marc threw it up and 'One Shining Moment' went off in my head," Wood said, referring to the song that CBS always plays to a montage of tournament highlights.
"Getting to do this in Raleigh ... it meant a lot," he added. "Four years, Marc's thrown me some perfect passes in practice that I've messed up pretty bad. Finally, I was able to get this one down."
SHOT FOR THE AGES: As the shot is replayed over the years, the distance of Ty Rogers' game-winning three-pointer will grow from 25 feet until it stretches from the St. Pete Times Forum to Eddyville, Ky., his hometown.
Rogers made the bucket at the buzzer to put the 12th-seeded Toppers in the second round. He was asked how many times he could hit the shot in 10 attempts.
"I'd like to say eight," he said and laughed.
Tyrone Brazelton, the teammate who got the game-winning assist, disagreed. "Nine, he'd make nine," he said.
NO BONNET, BUT...: It's unusual that the NCAA tournament falls on Easter Sunday, and teams are making different plans to mark the holiday.
Butler and Oklahoma are planning small services for players. Bulldogs coach Brad Stevens, who has a 2-year-old son, said his team's taking it farther with help from his wife, Tracy.
"I know my wife's working on an Easter egg hunt for the little kids, so we'll make sure the little ones who are with us are taken care of and know the Easter Bunny comes to Birmingham," Stevens said.
