GREENSBORO — Seven Triad missionaries who were stranded in Cameroon during a week of rioting returned to North Carolina Sunday night.
The group flew from Paris to Philadelphia before arriving at Piedmont Triad International Airport about 8:45 p.m. Sunday. They were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd of about 50 family members and friends waiting inside the front of the terminal.
The group was sponsored by the Giving Hand Foundation, run by Winston-Salem dentist Keith Phillips, who was also on the trip. The missionaries had been in Africa for about two weeks when anti-government protests erupted over high fuel prices and an attempt by Cameroon President Paul Biya to retain power. At least four people were killed in the rioting.
U.S. Embassy officials helped the group arrange for transportation to the closest airport in the city of Douala, about 100 miles away.
