HIGH POINT — Thomas Built Buses, makers of the ubiquitous yellow school bus, will lay off 190 employees by the end of the month. The company blamed tough economic times for the job cuts.
"The continued market conditions have resulted in a prolonged and widespread economic downturn, affecting our customers' purchase plans," the company said in a statement Monday.
The first wave of layoffs, affecting 85 employees, began Monday and will continue through the end of the week, the statement said. The company plans to cut another 105 workers by the end of the month, based on the seniority language in the employee labor contract.
Thomas Built Buses, with headquarters on Courtesy Road in High Point, employs about 1,600 workers, according to the company Web site. It wasn't clear Monday whether the site had been updated in light of the layoffs.
The company builds more than a third of the school buses sold in the United States and Canada, producing about 15,000 vehicles a year.
The company, which has been around for more than 90 years, also makes commercial buses and specialty vehicles.
