GREENSBORO - The News & Record and high school sports in the Triad lost an outstanding journalist and a great friend when Jeff Carlton died at approximately 11:30 a.m. today at Moses Cone Hospital after a long fight with brain cancer. He was 36.

A native of Alexandria, Va., Jeff had been with the News & Record since January 1998. The University of Virginia alumnus joined the sports staff as a copy editor and became the newspaper's primary high schools sports reporter in 1999. He later covered University of North Carolina athletics before returning to the high schools sports beat.

A memorial service will be held Saturday morning, but further details are not known at this time.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407.
