GREENSBORO — Authorities released new information Monday about a body found Saturday afternoon near the Randolph County line.

The Guilford County Sheriff's Office is looking to identify the body of a white male, approximately 60 years age or older.

The man was an estimated 5 feet 8 inches tall, wore dentures and had long black hair with some gray, according to an autopsy that began Monday at the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Chapel Hill.

The man is also believed to have had some type of hip surgery, evident from four staples found in his pelvic area.

The body was found shortly after 2 p.m. in a wooded area off the on ramp at N.C. 62 and U.S. 421 by a driver who had stopped along the side of the road, the sheriff's office said.

The body was found wrapped in a tarp and believed to have been there since spring or summer 2007.

The deceased was found wearing a white T-shirt, camouflage shorts and socks without shoes.

A cause of death remains undetermined.

Given the amount of time the body is believed to have been in the woods, Col. Randy Powers said the case provides some rare challenges for investigators.

"Any forensic evidence that might have been left would be gone because of the weather," Powers said. "You have to deal with what's in the tarp and getting that person ID'd."

Powers said the sheriff's office has been distributing frequent bulletins to surrounding law enforcement agencies in order to possibly find a match in a missing persons case.

"As it is, (finding) primarily skeletal remains... we are (distributing information) as we get it," Powers said.

"It takes a lot of information from the doctors ... and we'll continue going deeper and deeper (to solve this case)."

A full autopsy is expected to take two or more days.
