Health officials found a rabid skunk along Fairbluff Court in Summerfield, according to a release.
It tested positive for the rabies virus on Tuesday, the release said, and had contact with two domestic animals. Both of those animals had current rabies vaccinations.
The skunk is the first case of rabies found in Guilford County in 2008, according to the Guilford County Department of Public Health.
From the release:
Rabies is most common in the wildlife population of Guilford County. The best way to protect our domestic pet population is to make sure all pets are vaccinated against the rabies virus. Residents can get their pets vaccinated by their local veterinarian or at a local low cost rabies clinic. Rabies can occur during the winter, so residents should still make sure that their pet's rabies vaccination is up-to-date.
