GREENSBORO A 33-year-old bicyclist was able to flee to safety after four people in a car tried to rob him at gunpoint early Tuesday morning, police said.

The bicyclist, whom police did not identify in a press release, told Greensboro police he was riding near Lee and Chapman streets when a dark, gray Toyota Camry pulled up alongside him.

The front seat passenger displayed a handgun and ordered him to give up his wallet.

But they were possibly startled by a passing vehicle and the victim fled down Chapman Street.

The bicyclist gave a tag number for the car, which came back as stolen from Raleigh.

A Highway Patrolman later pulled the car and over and was able to apprehend two of the passengers.

Police ask people with information to call Crimestoppers at 373-1000.
