Decision on Grier may be made today

After weeks of speculation about Guilford County Superintendent Terry Grier, county residents could finally find out today whether the top school official will stay in North Carolina.

Then again, they might not.

After weeks of closed-door sessions, San Diego school board officials announced on their Web site Thursday afternoon that they will hold a special public meeting today to discuss an employment agreement for the superintendent of schools.

But San Diego school board Chairwoman Katherine Nakamura warned that does not mean the board will finally make a decision in their months-long superintendent search.

The board will meet in one more closed session with their attorney today before they meet in public, she said Thursday night.

If Grier, who is in the running for the job, knows he is going to be named their superintendent, he didn't let on Thursday night.

Grier said he didn't know if the San Diego school board was going to make an announcement about the job.

"I am one of three or four people they are talking to," Grier said while waiting to hear the county commissioners debate the school bond referendum.

Grier has been Guilford County Schools superintendent since 2000. His contract expires in two years.

San Diego school board members came to North Carolina in December to meet with school principals and administrators, parents and school board members about Grier.

A short time later, Grier confirmed that he was a candidate for their superintendent job, although he said he was happy with his current position.

Since then, the San Diego school board has met in numerous closed sessions to discuss the superintendent search.

But they have said little publicly about their process.

The San Diego Unified School District is one of the largest in the United States.

With 135,000 students, it is nearly twice the size of Guilford County Schools.

Guilford school board members said Thursday night that Grier has not shared any information with them about his job prospects.

Several said they are anxious to learn whether he will stay in Guilford County.

Board member Jeff Belton said if Grier goes to San Diego, that city will be getting a seasoned superintendent.

Board member Garth Hebert said Grier has been "less engaged" lately — perhaps a sign he might leave.

"He has really pulled back. He has been less engaged in the meetings since December," Hebert said. "It's not the old Terry."
