RALEIGH (AP) — The state Division of Motor Vehicles has stopped issuing driver's licenses and identification cards because of a problem with a national system.

DMV spokeswoman Marge Howell the system became overloaded Monday morning but problems should be corrected by Tuesday. It's unclear what caused the problem but officials don't suspect wrongdoing.

Howell said the national system is used by states to check Social Security numbers, commercial driver's license information and other national databases.

North Carolina uses the system to verify information before issuing state licenses and identification cards.
