(Updated Sunday, June 8 - 1:11 am)

GREENSBORO -- The city of Greensboro will start emptying residential recycling containers every other week starting Jan. 28.

The city will mail postcards to all residents who use the brown recycling containers to let them know about their pickup weeks. Residents also may visit http://www.greensboro-nc.gov or call 373-2489.

The day of the week for recycling collection will not change. The move away from weekly recycling pickup does not affect household garbage collection. The city will continue to pick up green cans on the regular collection day.

City residents may buy a second brown recycling container for $30 by calling 373-2489. Residents also may take recyclables to one of the city's nine drop sites: Fire Station No. 7 at 1064 Gatewood Avenue; Fire Station No. 14 at 3633 Summit Avenue; Fire Station No. 19 at 6900 Downwind Road; Jaycee Park at 3110 Forest Lawn Drive; Windsor Community Center at 1601 East Lee Street; Grimsley High School at 801 Westover Terrace; Smith High School at 2407 South Holden Road; Lindley Elementary School at 2700 Camden Road; and Guilford County Cooperative Extension Services at 3309 Burlington Road.

Recyclable items include:

* Newspapers, magazines, office paper and junk mail

* Plastic bottles No. 1 and No. 2

* Empty aerosol cans

* Glass food and drink bottles and jars

* Cardboard and chipboard (flat gray cardboard)

* Aluminum, steel, and tin cans
