As we plan for Thanksgiving, let’s remember that every day people go hungry in our area.

It is estimated that 12,767 people in Guilford County may fall under poverty levels or near those levels in 2010.

This has a great effect on our senior population.

Urban Ministry calls for aid at overflow shelters

The need hasn’t gone anywhere.

The Greensboro Urban Ministry last year was a major organizer of the Winter Emergency initiative, which involves staffing and food for overflow homeless shelter sites, most of which were located in churches. And executive director Mike Aiken is putting out a call for volunteers who can help again this winter.

Local performers and ensembles from as far away as Washington will perform this evening at Greensboro College’s sixth annual Gospel Fest and third annual Multi-Cultural Alumni Gathering.

The performances begin at 6 p.m. Friday in Finch Chapel on the college campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Some congregations will place white roses on the altar Sunday , to represent remembrance.

Others will recite the names of departed parishioners and friends, read scripture or sing special hymns as part of a special hospice Sabbath during regular worship times. More than 80 area churches are joining Hospice of the Piedmont (www.hospice-careconnection.org ) in the observance.

Moravia Moravian Church members have been arriving bright and early at the church one day a month for 15 years.
Well, at least early.

The day gets brighter after they spend several hours finishing their task — making chicken pies.

Normally, the group of about 15 church members makes about 160 pies one day each month. Production is increased for special occasions.

Youth on a Mission: First Baptist visits Ocoee Outreach

Taking a week out of their summer vacations, 30 members of the youth group from First Baptist Church in Greensboro traveled to Cleveland, Tenn., to help in the community by rebuilding and cleaning homes through the Ocoee Outreach organization.
