Several students and teachers hit the blacktop on Oct. 29 at Johnson Street Global Studies. Some walked. Some jogged. Some of them made the laps solo. Others chatted with friends.

Each week, 50 students and eight to 10 staff volunteers meet for an hour of education about nutrition, exercise and character building, then head outside for some laps.

Business 85 lanes closed in High Point

HIGH POINT — A serious crash has closed all lanes of northbound Business 85 at River Road this morning.

At least one person was seriously hurt in the crash, which happened at 6:07 a.m. Friday. Two vehicles were involved.

The Highway Patrol did not know when the lanes would reopen.

Online map shows High Point crime

HIGH POINT — Local residents can see an online map of crime in High Point at crimemapping.com.

The police department has started using the Web site so residents can track criminal acts near their homes and businesses. Residents also can get an e-mail if a crime is reported near a particular address.

Coble might get GOP challenger from High Point

HIGH POINT (MCT) — Local business manager Cathy Brewer Hinson plans to challenge Rep. Howard Coble from Greensboro in the GOP primary next year.

Hinson will become the first Republican to mount a primary challenge to Coble since he won the 6th District seat 25 years ago.

Police: Name on document leads to identification of robbery suspect

HIGH POINT — Police said they identified a robbery suspect because he left something with his name on it at the bank he robbed.

High Point police said a man walked into the Wachovia Bank at 1700 N. Main St. at 10:25 a.m. Tuesday and handed a note to a teller. He left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

High Point considers land for park

After a closed session Monday night to discuss purchase of property, the High Point City Council asked staff to negotiate the purchase of 50 acres for a park.

City Manager Strib Boynton said the property is located north of Burton Avenue, behind Cornerstone Health Care and North State Communication’s headquarters.

Elderly residents begin transition to new homes

HIGH POINT — Residents at High Point’s Wesleyan Homes are looking for new homes as the federally assisted apartments for the elderly prepare to shut down next year.

The building’s 80 residents were initially given between four and six months to vacate after owner Providence Place announced it would sell the property to High Point University.

67 pot plants seized in High Point; 62-year-old woman charged

HIGH POINT — A 62-year-old woman faces drug charges after police found 67 marijuana plants in her home.

High Point police said they seized the plants Tuesday afternoon from 125 Daveler Drive after getting an anonymous complaint. Police also said they found equipment used to cultivate and grow the plants.

High Point police identify shooting victim

HIGH POINT — Police have identified a man who was shot several times in the torso last week.

High Point police said Simplicio Rojas-Jaimez, 34, of High Point is in stable condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Paint factory in High Point to close

Valspar will close its paint manufacturing facility at 1647 W. English Road, where about 30 employees will lose their jobs.

High Point University site rezoned for parking

HIGH POINT — The City Council gave High Point University permission Thursday to build a parking lot off West College Drive.

The two lots — 906 E. Farris Ave. and 1011 Fifth Court — will be added to an area approved in April for parking and dorms.

But now the university wants to create only a parking lot.

HIGH POINT – High Point police are looking to ID and locate a man who robbed a BB&T Bank this afternoon.

At 2:40 p.m., a man entered the branch at 2105 Westchester Drive and demanded money.

After receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, the man fled and was last seen running southbound. No injuries were reported.

Dillard's now a clearance store in High Point

HPU plan continued for further study by City Council

HIGH POINT — A two-month drug investigation led to the arrest of eight men and the largest single drug seizure ever made by the High Point Police Department.

Police charged eight men with trafficking in cocaine after finding 14.5 kilograms of cocaine worth more than $1.45 million in a High Point home in August.

High Point Regional latest hospital to ban young visitors

HIGH POINT — High Point Regional Hospital is following the lead of most other area hospitals and has banned visitors younger than 18.

The restriction starts today and means that anyone younger than 18 will not be allowed to visit patients, including siblings, friends and family members and will not be allowed in lobbies, waiting areas and patient rooms.

N.C. Marathon moves to March

The North Carolina Marathon, which will be held for a third time in 2010, is moving to March 20.

That will put the 26.2-mile road race and companion half-marathon and 5K six weeks earlier and in weather that is historically 11 to 12 degrees cooler than the early May date of the race’s first two years.

High Point police arrest 4 people in car break-in spree

High Point police arrested four people in September they say were working together to burglarize cars in the Wendover Avenue corridor. During a six-week crime spree starting in July, approximately 70 vehicles were burglarized.
