Examiner releases autopsies of Pleasant Garden shooter, victims

Mary Ann Holder died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, according to an autopsy released Tuesday.

Authorities took a Smith & Wesson .32-caliber long revolver and a small, plastic bag with white powder that tested positive for cocaine from Holder’s SUV, the report said. But there was no cocaine or opiates in Holder’s body.

Ballinger Road closes for bridge work

GREENSBORO — Ballinger Road between New Garden and Chimney Rock roads has closed for a bridge repair project.

This section of road will be closed to through traffic until work is completed in 2013. Local traffic will be allowed.

To get to Leonard Recreation Center or Guilford Elementary, take West Friendly Avenue or Old Oak Ridge Road to North Chimney Rock Road.

Shots fired into Greensboro home

GREENSBORO — Two men kicked in the front door of a home and fired shots from a handgun before fleeing Monday night.

Greensboro police said Devongi Morrison and Latarshia Crawford told officers the men kicked in the door at 820 Broad Ave. shortly after 11 p.m.

Neither victim was hurt. The two assailants fled without taking anything.

Greensboro College raises tuition, other costs

GREENSBORO — Geensboro College's undergraduate tuition for 2012-2013 will increase 2.5 percent to $26,300 per year.

Standard housing costs will increase 2.1 percent, to $4,800 per year, after action taken Thursday by the college's Board of Trustees.

New Garden town home project delayed for a year

GREENSBORO — A $3.5 million town home project planned for northwest Greensboro will be delayed at least another year.

Beverly Simpson, president of B Simpson Construction Co., had planned to start construction in 2010 on a 16-unit town house project at 1809 New Garden Road, between Battleground Avenue and Bryan Boulevard.

Judge doesn’t halt filing for commissioners seats

GREENSBORO — People who want to file to run for the Guilford County Board of Commissioners can do so this week.

On Monday, U.S. Middle District Judge William L. Osteen Jr. did not decide about a temporary restraining order to keep commissioner candidates from filing for election.

He will hear more arguments and possibly issue a ruling Friday afternoon.

State offers solution in Guilford County redistricting lawsuit

GREENSBORO - The N.C. General Assembly has offered a solution in the legal battle over its controversial redrawing of Guilford County voting districts.

The plan would put all Guilford County commissioners up for election this year and would cut some of them to two- rather than four-year terms until 2014, according to a memo sent late Friday to the Board of Commissioners.

Judge William L. Osteen Jr. today set a date to consider a preliminary injunction against the law. The matter will come before him Feb. 17.

Greensboro parks commission supports concealed gun ban

GREENSBORO — The city's Parks and Recreation Commission voted 6-2 to support a law that will ban concealed handguns in certain city park facilities, Director Greg Jackson said today.

Last year, a new state law went into effect that expanded the number of places where concealed handgun permit holders may bring their weapons, including parks.
