Update: Report suggests closing, cutting back on state attractions

RALEIGH (AP) — The state should close an Elizabeth City museum, a Kinston historic site and reduce operating hours at seven other locations to reduce operating expenses at attractions with high costs and low visitor traffic, the legislature's fiscal watchdog agency said today.

Jill Biden coming to Greensboro

Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Joe Biden, will visit Greensboro on Feb. 24 as part of a bus tour meant to highlight community college partnerships with industry.

Biden will be traveling with U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis on a "Community College to Career" bus tour that will begin Feb. 22 in Columbus, Ohio.

Concealed guns OK'd for Forsyth parks

WINSTON-SALEM — The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners voted 4-2 on Monday for an ordinance that allows people with permits to carry concealed handguns in county parks.

The vote split along party lines, with Republican commissioners Debra Conrad, Gloria Whisenhunt, Bill Whiteheart and Richard Linville, the board chairman, all voting in favor.

Alston won't seek re-election

GREENSBORO — Guilford County Commissioner Melvin "Skip" Alston said today he will not seek re-election to his District 8 seat.

Alston, a Democrat, was first elected to the board in 1992 and was elected four more times after that. He ran unopposed in four of those five races.

Alston has been chairman of the commissioners since 2008.

Judge William L. Osteen Jr. today set a date to consider a preliminary injunction against the law. The matter will come before him Feb. 17.

Greensboro woman wins $181,279 in state lottery

Leslie Turner collected her $181,279 in winnings Wednesday after she and two others won the Dec. 23 Carolina Cash 5 jackpot.

Turner gets to keep $123,271 after taxes, the N.C. Education Lottery said in a news release.

She bought her ticket at a Quick Pick on West Friendly Avenue in Greensboro.
