New mayor ready for hard work

GREENSBORO — A crush of candidates, campaigners and media representatives filled the Old Guilford County Courthouse chambers with a roar of election-night activity Tuesday.

Bill Knight stood at the center of the room greeting passers-by with a smile and a handshake. He wore a bronze-colored name tag on his chest — the only obvious sign of his candidacy.

Former U.S. Marshal says he will seek sheriff’s office

GREENSBORO — Former U.S. Marshal and Guilford County deputy sheriff Harlon E. Costner announced Friday that he plans to run for sheriff in 2010.

Costner is the second candidate to officially announce his intention to run for sheriff. Sheriff BJ Barnes said over the summer that he plans to run for re-election to the post he has held since 1994.

Coble might get GOP challenger from High Point

HIGH POINT (MCT) — Local business manager Cathy Brewer Hinson plans to challenge Rep. Howard Coble from Greensboro in the GOP primary next year.

Hinson will become the first Republican to mount a primary challenge to Coble since he won the 6th District seat 25 years ago.

RALEIGH (AP) — Gov. Beverly Perdue says she hopes she doesn't have to recall North Carolina lawmakers to settle a dispute over whether 27 inmates can be released from prison.

But WRAL-TV reported today that Perdue's staff is working on legislation, just in case.

Obama nominates two N.C. judges to Fourth Circuit

Kay Hagan announced on her conference call this morning that President Barack Obama has nominated two North Carolina judges to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals: Judge James “Jim” Wynn, who currently sits on the N.C. Court of Appeals, and Judge Albert Diaz, a Superior Court judge in Mecklenburg County who handles complex business cases.
