Cities are competing with Greensboro to get Google to install an experimental fiber-optic network in their towns to deliver Internet access that is 100 times faster than what most people get now. Applications were due March 26. The Internet company plans to announce winners by the end of the year.
We take a look at how long a typical high-definition version movie, such as "Transformers," takes to download using different connections:
Dial-up connection: 9 days, 6 hours
DSL connection: 124 minutes
Cable connection: 106 minutes
Google's fiber-optic connection: 44 seconds
