WINSTON-SALEM (MCT) — Meadowlark Elementary Principal Ann Aust has been suspended without pay and schools Superintendent Don Martin is asking that she be fired.

Martin said that his decision was based on an internal investigation and didn't involve students or "instructional issues."

However, the fundraiser came to an abrupt halt Wednesday after a story in The News & Observer raised concerns about the practice of selling grades.

Wayne County school administrators stopped the fundraiser, issuing a statement Wednesday morning.

The board voted 9-2 Tuesday night to invite the High Point and Greensboro police chiefs and the Guilford County sheriff to a meeting to talk about the controversial topic.

GREENSBORO -- The county school board opted not to extend an option on property they're considering for the southeast area elementary school. The board voted 5-6 against extending the contract on a total of 55 acres near McLeansville through February.
