Greensboro College raises tuition, other costs

GREENSBORO — Geensboro College's undergraduate tuition for 2012-2013 will increase 2.5 percent to $26,300 per year.

Standard housing costs will increase 2.1 percent, to $4,800 per year, after action taken Thursday by the college's Board of Trustees.

GREENSBORO — The U.S. Green Building Council has awarded UNCG's new School of Education building LEED Gold certification. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) specifications are set by the Council. Gold is the second-highest certification level.

CHAPEL HILL — Amid chants of protest from about 100 students, the UNC Board of Governors this morning approved President Tom Ross' proposal for tuition and fee hikes over the next two years.

Ross' plan would raise tuition by an average of 8.8 percent across the system and keeps increases below 10 percent on every campus.

UNC committee approves tuition, fees increase

CHAPEL HILL — A University of North Carolina system committee today approved President Tom Ross’ recommendations for tuition and fee increases by nearly 9 percent next year.

The UNC Board of Governors’ budget and finance committee voted 5-1 to approve Ross’ proposal.

The full board will take a final vote on the recommendations during a meeting Friday.

CHARLOTTE — Firefighters credit an alert bus driver who got elementary school students off a bus in Charlotte on Wednesday before it erupted in flames, the Charlotte Observer reported.

The driver and the six students on board escaped safely.

CHAPEL HILL -- A coalition of students, faculty, workers and others will gather at the Pit on UNC's campus Friday for a march to the UNC system General Administration Building to protest tuition increases being considered by the UNC Board of Governors.

The board is expected to decide Friday whether to OK tuition increases recommended earlier this year by UNC system President Tom Ross.

WINSTON-SALEM — Winston-Salem State University is mourning the death of another of its students, the third to have died this school year.

On Friday, Thea-Simone McDuffie, a sophomore justice studies major from Charlotte, was killed when the car she was driving plummeted nearly 50 feet off the U.S. 52 bridge over Old U.S. 64 in Davidson County.

RALEIGH — A new report says crime, suspensions and dropouts were all down in North Carolina public schools during the year that ended last summer.

The state Department of Public Instruction said in its annual report on school crime and violence released Thursday that offenses and suspensions relate to whether children stay in school to graduation.

Thompson sold 100 of them for $25 at a flea market, and it only cost her $5 to make them, she said.

Now, she’s ready to sell her craft in a different market: UNCG’s first student-run store, Spartan Trader.
