Arnold won't run for re-election

GREENSBORO - The vice-chairman of Guilford County's Board of Commissioners will not run for re-election this year.

Steve Arnold, the long-time Republican commissioner from District 2, said he would be "pursuing other opportunities" Tuesday, bringing an end to recent speculation about his political future.

GREENSBORO — A woman died early today in a fire at the Cumberland Courts apartments just east of downtown.

Authorities identified the victim as 82-year-old Katherine Harris, whom firefighters found inside the apartment as they battled the blaze at 327-E Cumberland St.

GREENSBORO — A Greensboro man will spend at least the next 41 years in prison after admitting to killing a woman, tying her up and setting her body on fire, a judge ruled Monday.

Guilford County Superior Court Judge Andy Cromer sentenced 25-year-old Donnie Lee Ingram for killing 61-year-old Marie Byrd on Nov. 25, 2008.

Bank robbed in Walkertown

WINSTON-SALEM — Forsyth County deputies are searching for a man who robbed a bank this morning.

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said the SunTrust bank branch at 2820 Old Hollow Road was robbed at 11:08 a.m. Tuesday. The lone suspect fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of money. No injuries were reported.

MEBANE — Two people were killed when two vehicles collided early this morning on Interstate 40/85 in eastern Alamance County.

The Highway Patrol said a Honda Civic with four people inside was going westbound on I-40/85 when it stopped on the highway. At 7:49 a.m., the disabled car was hit from behind by a Ford Explorer.
