The Durham city firefighter climbed to the 86th floor of the Empire State Building in New York City as part of a "race" for charity.

It was no cakewalk, but the 50--year--old made it up all 1,567 steps without collapsing.

In an interview Thursday, Howard was still fired up about meeting the challenge.

Davidson teacher from 'Extreme Makeover' succumbs to cancer

Tricia Creasey, a Davidson County teacher whose struggle with cancer was featured on the TV show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," has died.

Creasey died about 2:30 p.m. Thursday at home with family and friends by her side, said Randy Holmes, the principal of E. Lawson Brown Middle School in Thomasville, where she taught.

Gift will preserve Civil War coat

A Wolfgang Puck Pizza Bar is opening in the old RBC Bank branch at 615 Green Valley Road at Friendly Center.

Friendly Center general manager Brad Rogers says the building is being gutted for a complete inside and outside transformation.

“We’re very excited about it,” Rogers says.
