Jesse Wharton is the largest elementary school in Guilford County, serving almost 1,000 students. The school, 10 years old, lacks technology basic to newer schools. Our PTA is attempting to rectify this situation. Specifically, we are trying to equip every classroom with voice amplification systems. Voice amplification systems combine specialized speakers and microphones to improve signal-to-noise ratio. They help each child in the classroom hear as well as if he/she is sitting on the front row. Studies show that when children can hear better, they  learn better. We plan to use voice amplification systems to improve student achievement, attention, and behavior in the classroom. Jesse Wharton teachers who have piloted voice amplification systems reported less personal fatigue and voice strain. The cost of this technology is about $1,200 per classroom. Our short-term goal is to have a system in one class per grade level. Our lont-term goal is to have a voice amplification system in every classroom.
The PTA has already purchased two systems and a third was donated by a family at our school. Any amount of support we receive will be greatly appreciated.
