Obituaries FAQ

The News & Record serves the community 365 days a year by notifying it of the passing of one of its own and celebrating the life of a departed family member.  The following guidelines are shown below in order to achieve this in a sensitive and timely manner.

  
Obituaries—4:30 p.m. for submission and prepayment the day before publication.

In-Memeoriam—4:30 p.m. for submission and prepayment two business days in advance of the publication date.

How do I publish a loved one’s obituary in the News & Record?
  • Copy of obituary by fax, email or placed in person at our office, Monday through Friday, 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Weekends and major holidays are by email or fax only.
  • Contact name, address and phone number of the family member paying
  • Contact information for the funeral home/cremation service that is assisting with the arrangements of the deceased or a death certificate.
  • Name of the city under in which the deceased lived.
  • Photo if desired- send the file in an e-mail in a jpeg, pdf or tif format larger than 35KB
 
The News & Record can only accept one version of the obit from one family member. If other family members wish to place a message, they will be published as an In Memoriam ad.
 
 
What is a Paid Obituary?
A paid obituary can include photos, icons and any additional information such as survivors, organization memberships, education, career, hobbies, activities, etc.
  • Obituaries begin at $30 plus .50 cents per word.
  • A photo is an additional $25.
  • Icons are an additional $10; the American Flag icon is free to all veterans
 
Photos and Emblems:
A photo of your family member can be included in paid obituaries and in-memoriams. 
  • For the best quality please send a bright, clear, black and white head and shoulders photo should be used. 
  • Please avoid dark, group and Polaroid photos.
Please write the name of your departed family member of the back of the photo. We will do our best to return the photo to you, but we cannot be responsible for lost or damaged photos submitted for obituaries or memorials.
 
 
What is a Free Obituary?
A free obituary will only include:
  • Name
  • Age of deceased
  • Date of death
  • Date and location of the funeral and burial
  • Funeral home assisting the family. 
Visitation services are not included in a free obituary. A free ad will be run in paper one time with the appropriate information. Any additional information added will be quoted as a paid obit. An incomplete ad will be considered a free obituary.
 
 
What is an In Memoriam?
An in-memoriam ad is placed to remember birthdays, wedding anniversaries, death anniversaries, holidays or any special day for the departed.
  • An in-memoriam with photo starts at $78; this includes the border, photo, name, date of birth and date of death and a two line message.
  • An in-memoriam without photo starts at $60; this includes the border, name, date of birth and date of death and a two line message.
  • Additional lineage is $2.19 per line.
 
 How can we pay?
  • Credit Card
  • Debit Card
  • Cash or Check (only weekday business hours)
The News & Record requires prepayment on all obituary notices before 4:30 p.m. for the obituary to appear in the next day’s paper. If payment is not received, or if the credit card is declined, the News & Record will publish a free announcement for your obituary. Only one obituary will be published at no charge. Should you want the complete obituary to run the following day, new payment arrangements will need to be made.
