She’s along the banks of the Haw, in the words of Greensboro mystery writer John Hart and beside the two-lane roads that stretch south toward the oldest mountains on earth.
She’s had it hard. In the past decade, she’s lost 24,000 jobs in Guilford, Rockingham and Randolph counties. Bit by bit, she’s lost some of her luster. Her textiles, tobacco and furniture don’t look so good in her mirror anymore.
But she sees a new reflection. It’s a fresh glow brought on by technology, transportation and the intellectual horsepower from at least a dozen colleges and universities, where every year graduates begin a future all their own.
She’s been called the “alternative South,’’ a place where slavery never took root and tolerance was never a novelty. Now, she’s like much of America: a land of many faiths and many languages where democracy is messy and change is hard. Continue reading
