News & Record journalists win sports writing contest awards

Journalists representing the News & Record have won six awards in the Associated Press Sports Editors contest for work completed during 2011.

The contest is the most prestigious in sports journalism. Ten awards are given out per circulation division, and APSE later will rank top fives.

The News & Record’s winners:

Margaret Moffett Banks, Jason Wolf and Gerald Witt: Breaking News (combined entry)

Jason Wolf: Breaking News and Beat Reporting

Jeff Mills: Beat Reporting

Gerald Witt: Investigative

Dustin Long: Breaking News (Long wrote for the News & Record, Roanoke Times and Virginian-Pilot, and his entry was submitted by the Virginian-Pilot.)
