Our mentally retarded daughter Elizabeth, 50, died a few days before the tragic death of Whitney Houston, 48. I watched the magnificent service for Houston on Feb. 18.
I contemplated how each of these two, although at opposite extremes of the world’s esteem and acclaim, was received into heaven’s realm by the same Lord Jesus as an equal. That is the greatness of God.
Houston’s service was beautiful and inspiring, especially the remarks of the Rev. T.D. Jakes and Kevin Costner. Costner reminded us of Houston’s humility. When she was being screened for the movie, “The Bodyguard,” he repeatedly had to reassure her that she was “good enough.” He even described her hesitancy to join Heaven’s choir: “Am I good enough?”
Perhaps God’s more complete response to her question went something like this: “Whitney, when you were conceived I gave you the greatest voice in the world. When you were born again I clothed you in My righteousness which assured you of Heaven. Yes, My child, you are truly good enough.
“Now allow Me to introduce you to the lady beside you. She never spoke a complete sentence on earth, but you will enjoy her voice in the choir. Her name is Elizabeth.”
