Playgrounds and parks are no place for guns

A Feb. 10 article concerned the Greensboro Parks & Recreation board’s recent vote “to support a law that will ban concealed handguns in certain park facilities.” The article went on to say that this issue could come before the City Council as soon as Feb. 21.” I urge the council to follow the example of the High Point City Council, which recently voted to ban concealed weapons at city playgrounds, athletic fields, swimming pools and athletic facilities.

Shame on state legislators for passing a law that “expands the number of places where concealed handgun permit holders may bring their weapons, including parks.” At least the law allows cities to make their own laws about this issue, and I hope Greensboro will make a sensible decision.

Nancy has a point but the wrong one. Parks and, Playgrounds etc are NOT crime free areas. Kidnappings and many other types of crimes have been known to occur in parks or on playgrounds.

I live in High Point and I think they were wrong to mess with the state law regulating this. The same wouldf apply to any other municipality including Greensboro, Charlotte, Windston Salem, Reidsville. or anyone else.
Cities and municipalities should not mess with any state mandated law of any kind. It's just wrong.

Oh! and if you and I are ever in a park or on a playground and some one tries to harm you or yours or God forbid even kill anyone please don't expect me to save your hide.

I guess, it would depend on your definition of " sensible decision ", wouldn't it?

I went to the shooting range yesterday. I had to wait in line for a range. It was very busy and this was a Wednesday in the afternoon. Week ends are busier. Guns and their owners are all over the place. If it's concealed how would you know a person has a weapon. If that person happens to stop a crime in a park with a gun the potential victims will be most thankful and hopefully the DA will not prosecute.
Also, on another matter in the opinion section today.....On the way home from the range I passed by Friendly and Hobbs Rd. That area should remain residential. Those are nice homes and I don't think that intersection can handle the traffic. This City Council in two months has created a storm with this, the arts center. 100,000 dollars to a grocery store and more. The people now elected created a storm with White Street. We could be saving 4 million dollars a year with our trash. Mayor Knight, we miss you.
