Jeffus will not seek re-election

RALEIGH -- Rep. Maggie Jeffus said today that she will not seek re-election this year.

Jeffus, a Greensboro Democrat, has served 10 terms in the state House. After the 2011 redistricting, she was drawn into the same legislative district as Rep. Pricey Harrison, a fellow Greensboro Democrat.

"The General Assembly is no longer a part-time legislature but a full-time legislature, and that leaves little time for family. I would like to spend more time with my grandchildren, and my husband and I would like to travel and spend more time at the coast," Jeffus said Wednesday.

She added, "It has been a real honor to serve the citizens of Guilford County, and I want to thank them for allowing me to be their representative for these many years."

Jeffus was a chief budget writer when Democrats last controlled the General Assembly. She lost that post when Republicans took control of the state House in January 2011.

Glad she made that decision. Interesting comment about her being the chief budget writer under the Democrats. Now that they are no longer in control she can't write the legislation that doles out favors to her constituents and supporters, so guess retirement make sense. Enjoy your retirement Maggie!

Good move. Now if we can just get Pricey, Earl and the Fool in the Hat to follow suit

I guess I probably should remind you Earl is not a state legislator anymore. Marcus Brandon won that post. Also the "fool" (your words not mine) in the hat is Alma Adams. Geeze. Would it kill you to bring a little bit of knowledge before you go spoutin' off at the mouth. smh

why does it always seem, when democrats leave office, they spend more time at the coast?

Lots of retirees head down to the beach. I would too, if I could afford it.

Wish I could afford to retire - period. Guess I should have gone for a governMINT job. The benefits from the generous taxpayers would allow me to retire and hit the beach too.

Retirement? For me there will be no retirement, and I will work until Expirement. I could never afford to retire, so it's a good thing I love my work.

Ditto, Jean.

Happy retirement Mrs. Jeffus!

Good! TEN terms in office is long enough. It was TOO long, frankly. Elective office is not meant to become a personal fiefdom. Thank you for doing the right thing, Mr. Jeffus.
