When we vote for a president in November, we very likely will also be voting for possibly three Supreme Court justices, due to vacancies almost certain to occur during the presidential term. The president’s term will be four years. His court appointments will be for life — 20 or 30 years. Voters who are on the fence between Romney and Obama might want to take a look at the probable makeup of the court that will result from our presidential votes. On controversial topics, the present court almost always votes 5-4 in favor of positions generally held by the political right.
The vacancies most likely to occur will come from the minority four on the left, due to age and health considerations. If a centrist/independent voter is happy with the Citizens United decision and believes that corporations are people and money is free speech, then he or she should probably support Mr. Romney. If not, he or she should probably support Mr. Obama.
