In your Jan. 29 editorial (“Trader Joe’s ... here?”) you quoted a Forbes magazine profile espousing the benefits of “Trader Joe’s” as an argument for allowing a strip mall to be built on property zoned residential on Friendly Avenue.
I suggest you consider another Forbes profile from 2001, ranking Greensboro 38th out of 40 places for singles in the U.S. In it, Michael Noer states, “The sprawling, strip mall-strewn landscape cornered by Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point is a grim place to be flying solo,” and concludes, “Maybe things would improve if the city fathers concentrated on reviving downtown instead of rubber-stamping the permits for yet another Home Depot or Office Max. Until then, steer well clear.”
The Regency Center’s strip mall proposal is not in the 50-plus-year development interests of Greensboro. Prudent “infill” development for this property would be residential.
