Greenpeace protesting at N.C. Progress Energy plant

ARDEN (AP) — Some Greenpeace protesters have climbed a smokestack that towers over a power plant near Asheville.

Progress Energy spokesman Scott Sutton says a handful of protesters scaled the column at the Asheville Power Plant in Arden on Monday morning.

Sutton says the utility's highest priority is to safely remove the protesters and protect the 400-megawatt plant that serves Progress customers in western North Carolina.

Greenpeace spokeswoman Keiller MacDuff says activists have secured themselves to devices including the coal loader and conveyer belts. She says the group thinks plants like the one in Asheville that use coal damage the environment.

Sutton says the group has also hung banners around the facility. He says police are working to remove the protesters.

Ok, so what do they propose? Hydro - no, too many fish will get hurt. Nuclear - no, too dangerous. Wind or solar - not feasible at 400 MW or would hurt birds, crops land, turtles or something.

The only solution these guys want is a return to the dark ages.

They're just a bunch of complainers with zero solutions.

I don't think burning coal is a good thing but we can't just turn the lights off.

BRAVO! It takes actions like this to get people to start thinking. There are so many conservation measures that can be taken, cutting power use in half without even adding one solar panel, but if we did both those things, we would never have to lose another mountain, irreplaceable ecosystem or river to mountaintop mining.

Wow, some people are stupid, these people got up and turned on the light switch, took a warm bath and cooked their food. Where do these morons think that this power comes from. Nuclear power is the safest form of power in the world.Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Arrest them all and let them enjoy life as a criminal. oh by the way trespassing at a nuclear power plant is a federal offense and the feds do not have probation or parole, so let them do a little federal time and come out and not be able to get housing or a job. It would serve them right.

BRAVO! Bring in the police to take care of these trespassers. Hopefully, a swat team will not be needed.

Why do they just quit using electricity?

Poor darlings have to complain about something, guys!

Let them sit on the stacks - foodless. Then jail them when they get hungry and have to come down to their waiting mommies. Oh, and sue them for defecating and creating unsanitary conditions. And trespassing too.

Jolly thought: In California there is a water shortage. Desalinization plants are going to be needed. Those plants are not going to run on love and wishful thinking. LOL!!!

A report was released and stated on FOX NEWS with Bret Baier that in the year 2050 we would still need fossil fuels for 75% of our energy needs. We have to make sensible decisions and use all of the energy options we have and not think that solar and wind are going to change everything. And BTW, who gave the President the authority to decide what kind of energy we need and not to use everything at hand.

Why don't they go and help Sea Shepherd save a whale or 2?

Understand, they have arrested 16 of them.
Reckon they could get the mayor of Carrboro, to buy them ice cream?

Make them stay up there until they run out of food and water and BEG to come down. And BTW where is security? We should be securing our plants especially our water supplies. Will it take a tragedy to get security where we need it? Rather than spend 100,000 dollars to move a grocery store our community should be securing these vital places.
But I guess we must think about dancing and plays and downtown fun FOR SOME.

People that think solar power is the answer don't know how to use their calculator.
