2 Orange County teens die in crash
MEBANE — Two Orange County teens died Saturday after their car ran off a gravel portion of Buckhorn Road and hit a tree, state troopers said.
Samantha Faith Tilley, 16, of Hillsborough and Catherine Elizabeth Shivers, 19, of Efland died in the crash, which troopers said was reported shortly before noon.
Tilley was driving too fast on the gravel, ran off the road to the left, overcorrected and then hit the tree, according to the Highway Patrol.
Tilley, who was driving a 2005 Toyota, was not wearing a seat belt, according to the accident report.
Troopers estimated the car Tilley was driving had beengoing about 55 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Tilley was a sophomore at Cedar Ridge High School in Hillsborough.
Shivers graduated there last year and was attending UNC Pembroke, Principal John Wheeler said.
