Civil War group gives money to save officer's coat

RALEIGH (AP) — A group of Civil war re-enactors are donating $10,000 so that a coat worn by a North Carolina officer wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg can be preserved.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that the money will help the state Museum of History preserve and display the coat worn by Collett Leventhorpe.

The 1st North Carolina Volunteers of the 11th Regiment will donate the money Friday at the museum.

Leventhorpe was a colonel in the 11th North Carolina Regiment, the unit the 1st/11th re-enacts. He was badly wounded on the first day of fighting at Gettysburg. He was held prisoner before returning to North Carolina and accepting a commission as a brigadier general in the N.C. Home Guard.

The coat dates to his time as brigadier general.
