I can appreciate GTA needing and wanting to increase revenue. What would be greatly appreciated would be some return to the passengers in the way of buses arriving/leaving on schedule, regular bus routes on Sunday with service continuing past 6 pm, and perhaps occasionally cleaning the buses.

So, the very people who can't afford regular transportation are now getting increased bus fares.

I blame all you voters for our mess. You voted these morons in, not me I don't vote.

If you don't vote, you are the problem, not us!

I agree with timflowers. It's like getting mad at the police, because they didn't show up after your house was robbed...but, you didn't bother to call 911.

maybe we can just disband GTA and buy the regular passengers a reliable, fuel efficient car, and try to save the working taxpayer $11. Of course then they'll complain the didn't get an Escalade...

Public transportation should not be subsized by the taxpayers. It should be paid for by the user, like user fees. Gas prices have gone up. Buses wear out and must be replaced. Drivers and other employees must be paid a salary.

From what I understand, the bus system is better than getting a cab.

In my opinion the bus system is part of our safety net. It is intended to provide basic transporation for those who don't have the money to buy and operate a car. It is not intended to provide first class limo service.

To those who say it is not fair, I say "you should have worked harder in school". Anyone who has a good education, good work skills in Greensboro NC doesn't have to ride a bus. When people do not take advantage of opportunities the taxpayers provide, I have difficulty giving sympathy.

I'm amazed at the callousness and ignorance of your post. Get out of your bubble and learn how people are doing their best to cope in today's harsh world.

And you don't think that driving your car isn't subsidized? Who paves and maintains the roads, who makes the safety improvements, who provides police and emergency services for accidents?

I do not believe I am without feeling for the poor. I actually talk to several of them downtown. Here is what my experience has been.

1. Public transportation is not a right. The taxpayers, through the kindness of their hearts, provide a basic service for those who need it.

2. The poor that I talk to downtown all tell me they are high school dropouts who did not try in school. They did not think school was important. Their parents did not value education.

3. Please tell me of anyone who has an education or today's job skills who cannot get a job. I'm not talking about the job of their dreams, I'm talking about a job.

4. The road system is paid in large part by a gas tax, which is paid by people who use the roads, a user fee. Some of the city road repair comes from the city general funds. The city general funds come mostly from property tax and sales tax. The people who pay property tax and sales tax are most likely to have automobiles. The people using the city roads are the people who pay for those roads. The poor pay very little in city taxes. They get back far more than they pay in.

5. The safety net was not designed to provide a middle class lifestyle. It was designed to provide basic necessities for those who do not have them. The safety net is provided by the taxpayers through the kindness of their hearts.

6. About 90% of the adults in Greensboro work and are trying to improve their lives. There should be more attention paid to this 90%.

7. The better the safety net (programs, food, shelter, clothing, etc.) in Greensboro, the more poor and homeless will come to Greensboro from other areas, because of those benefits.

8. There is a thing called personal responsibility. In my opinion, the taxpayers are providing basic necessities for all the city's residents. In my opinion, anything above the basic necessities are the responsibility of the individual. Countries like Greece are facing serious problems today because they attempted to give too many entitlements.

Hey this is just the hidden consumption tax in America that no one talks about. It’s called US Dollar inflation and the lowest income group will pay it and most of them will just see increasing prices and complain. The high income folks in America are not worried about printing too many Dollars because their broker has them in inflation protected investments.

It’s the old adage the rich get richer and the poor get…well you know.
