GRAHAM (AP) — An Alamance County man will spend at least four years in prison for cheating an elderly woman out of roughly $150,000, mostly in the form of personal loans that he never repaid.

The Times-News of Burlington reported today that Michael Eugene Massengill, 54, was sentenced after pleading guilty Monday.

Prosecutors say Massengill met the woman when buying land from her in 2001. Over the next nine years, they say, he borrowed money from her and repeatedly bounced checks meant to repay her.

The woman took out loans herself to give Massengill money.

The 82-year-old woman now living in a nursing home could lose the property she and her husband have owned since the 1940s because of the debt she incurred on Massengill's behalf.
