Hong Kong company to expand Greensboro office

Monday, February 6, 2012
(Updated Tuesday, February 7 - 5:01 am)

— Gov. Bev Perdue announced a job expansion today at LF USA, a subsidary of Li & Fung Ltd, a Hong Kong-based multinational group with offices on Grandover Parkway.

Local officials say LF USA quietly located here late last year and has already hired about 145 workers. It expects to add 55 more by the end of the year.

According to its website, Li & Fung is recognized as the world’s leader in consumer goods design, development, sourcing and distribution.

The company, which has about 27,000 employes worldwide, manages the supply chain for retailers and brands around the world. It has about 240 offices and distribution centers in the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Company officials said LF USA typically doubles in size every three to four years.

All but 20 of the initial hires were local; the other workers transfered from LF USA’s office in New York.

There are no incentives involved in the expansion, local officials said, adding that Greensboro beat out several other cities, including Orlando, Nashville and Baltimore.

Perdue made her announcement at 4620 Grandover Parkway, the location of LF USA.

The Greensboro operation is the company’s second in the U.S.

Melvin “Skip” Alston, chairman of the Guilford County Board of Commissioners, and Mayor Pro Tem Yvonne Johnson welcomed the company to the area. But neither knew much about the company or its expansion plans before today.

“I am trying to find some facts about it myself,” Alston said this morning. “We are going to be talking about some jobs. They asked me to treat it confidentially.”

Johnson said, “I am fixing to do my own research.”

Instead of just printing the press release from our lame duck governor, couldn't the reporter at least tell readers what this company is/does? Who is he editor that thinks this press release is news, beyond the jobs announcement cheerleading, anyway...

Happier now that we've filled in some of the blanks?

You have to understand that Rooster wasn't really asking a question.

To clarify, he was commenting on an early version of the story. We've updated it several times today as we learned more.

Has the economy really gotten that bad in this state, that the Governor actually takes the time to travel to Greensboro to announce 55 jobs?

Koury Corporation. The ghost of Joe Koury.

Koury Corporation owns the building. The publicity will be good for Koury Corporation.

Joe Koury was a visionary. He did more to grow Greensboro than anyone I know in the past 35 years. Even though he is deceased, Koury still have the influence to bring a governor to town.

"Johnson said, “I am fixing to do my own research.”
Nice quote for the assistant mayor and representative of Greensboro. Couldn't be troubled with doing it beforehand?

Sad day at the News & Record when a cheap story about 55 jobs is front and center.

Indeed. And a sad commentary on the economy when 55 jobs warrants a press conference.

Hey guys.....when the liberal Dems haven't much to brag about....shout it from the house top....ha!

By the way, what I know about Bev personally, is that she's a class act.

I do not know Gov Perdue personally. I do have friends who do know her well.

Some think she is a class act.

Others believe she broke promises that she made to them during the campaign.

I'm not trying to defend Bev Perdue (I am a lifelong democrat who actually voted for Pat for governor because I knew she was going to be a bust) and 55 jobs may not seem like a lot, but given we beat out some pretty big cities for them is what makes it a big deal. Jeffic Fail!
