— Two people were killed and a third remains in serious condition after the 1997 Ford Taurus in which they were riding plunged over the side of an overpass on U.S. 52.

Killed were Thea-Simone McDuffie, 19, and Shavalos Jameson, 21, both of Charlotte, according to Sgt. K.G. Brown of the Highway Patrol.

Trevon Rutherford, 16, of Charlotte remains in critical condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Troopers said the wreck happened about 1:15 p.m. at the bridge over Old Highway 64.

The car, which Brown said McDuffie was driving, was headed south on U.S. 52 Friday afternoon. The car somehow ended up in the median near the overpass, before going airborne and landing 20 to 30 feet down the embankment on the other side of Old Highway 64, Brown said.

Investigators didn’t find any evidence of mechanical problems and have ruled out alcohol or texting, Brown said.
