New rock slide along I-40 on N.C. side of state line

RALEIGH (AP) — North Carolina officials say a new rock slide has occurred along a stretch of Interstate 40 already closed by an earlier rock and mud slide just over the Tennessee state line.

A statement from the N.C. Department of Transportation says the new slide happened around noon on Friday near Mile Marker 7. Traffic isn't being affected because that section of the highway was already closed following a similar incident in Tennessee on Tuesday.

It's not clear yet whether the new rock slide will affect the length of time it takes to reopen the interstate. Engineers from the North Carolina DOT were still assessing the extent of the slide Friday.

Officials in both states had said they expected the highway to reopen to traffic early next week.
