FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — A Fayetteville woman has been charged with taking Social Security checks from her daughter's best friend.

The Fayetteville Observer reported that 43-year-old Kimberly Louise Kirby is charged with nine counts of forgery and other charges.

Cumberland County sheriff's deputies say the victim's father died more than four years ago, when she was 16. The girl moved in with Kirby's family and was receiving Social Security benefits.

Deputies say Kirby told the teen the checks had stopped in 2009. Investigators say the woman was instead cashing the checks without the girl's knowledge.

Deputies say Kirby used the money to bail out a failing business.

It was not clear if Kirby has a lawyer.
