Greensboro using smoke to test sewer lines

GREENSBORO - You might soon be noticing smoke rising from yards, stream banks or storm drains.

That's because the city and a Pennsylvania-based contractor are performing sewer testing using non-toxic smoke in various places throughout Greensboro until March 1, according to a news release.

The smoke is dropped into a manhole, which eventually flows into the sewer lines.

Any open break in the sewer line will be identified by the smoke.

The smoke could escape from manholes, lids, vents on building roofs and underneath buildings that enter homes and offices.

The smoke does not stain, has a slight odor, does not pose a fire hazard and will appear white to gray in color, according to the city.

The city asks residents to pour a gallon of water into every sink, tub, and floor drain that is not used daily to prevent smoke from entering.

Drivers traveling in locations being tested may also notice some traffic delays.

The city plans to provide more updates.
