CHAPEL HILL (AP) — State Rep. Joe Hackney of Orange County said today that he will not seek re-election after more than 30 years in the legislature.
Hackney, a Democrat who served two terms as House speaker, said he is looking forward to a more predictable schedule for his family, his law practice and the Chatham County farm he and his brother operate.
Hackney served as speaker from 2007 through 2010 but lost the job when Republicans became the majority in early 2011. He has served as minority leader since then. He will serve out his term, which ends this year.
Republicans' redrawing of election districts placed Hackney in the same district as Rep. Verla Insko, also a Democrat.
Hackney is a past president of the National Conference of State Legislatures.
