LEXINGTON — Hospice of Davidson County has received a $500,000 gift from the estate of Christine Young Harris.

Harris was married to Charles Harris, who helped lead Lexington Telephone Co. until he died in 2003. The company was sold to Windstream Corp. in 2010.

Hospice officials say they play to use the donation to offer more clinical resources through its community bereavement and grief programs. It also plans to create an annual educational workshop and lecture series.

Last year, the hospice's social workers made nearly 4,200 visits, and counselors worked with more than 2,200 individuals and families.

“We want to be a resource for those experiencing a loss, but also for other professionals who provide bereavement and counseling services in our community,” Cindy Hicks-Chisenhall, clinical services officer for the hospice, said in a news release.
